NFL Rivals

How do you take on one of the biggest and best known franchises in videogame history? You do something different, which is what we did with NFL Rivals, an officially licensed mobile (American) football game.

We created an upstart disruptive brand, playing up the idea of tribal rivalries in sports, and at the time of writing NFL Rivals is in the top 15 of all sports games in the App Store.

- Another successful launch in Google Play and Apple App Store - one of the first games on both platforms to integrate player-owned assets.
- The title just broke the $2 million mark in trading value of collectible items.

When NFL Rivals was in its early stages of development, we swarmed together a crack team of UX pros to figure out some of the basic features.

A great example is the Roster screen, where the player needs to be able to quickly and easily see which players they have, which new ones they have acquired, and how to put out the best possible team. The sketch shows an early version of the screen, long before we made some of the UI decisions that would come later.

UX and UI meet in areas such as typography; the italic condensed style we chose for the player names aids clarity, makes it easier to fit longer surnames - and looks great in contrast to the handwritten style which is a big part of the Rivals brand.
