Blankos Block Party

Mythical Games broke new ground with Blankos - the first game in the Epic Store to use blockchain tech to give players true ownership of their assets, including the ability to buy and sell amongst each other in the Mythical Marketplace.

But more importantly, Blankos was huge fun to play! As a game focused around user generated content, it had to have a super intuitive player experience for creating levels, especially using a controller with its limited number of buttons.

Results

- Blankos was the first blockchain-based game to feature in the Epic Store
- Players could quickly and easily jump into a multiplayer game with friends
- Our community made a huge number of incredible levels using our custom tools

We had to build an entirely new player experience from the ground up, not only to allow them to quickly and easily dive into playing a Party with their friends, but also to enable them to create their own worlds without feeling like they had to learn new software. It had to be fun!

While it was tough to find a direct comparison to the Blankos build mode, we could draw on plenty of UX best practices. For example, it was critical to keep potentially confusing processes as simple as possible.

Blankos edit mode early sketch

Very early white box mock-up showing how we planned to have the player’s Blanko interacting with items in the Creative mode, while staying within the world of vinyl toys. Check out the rattle can for applying changes.

The world of Blankos Block Party is based on the idea of collectible vinyl toys that have come to life. Much of the personality of the game comes from the amazing concept art and the work of the many professional artists who contributed designs for Blankos, each one full of amazing colours, shapes and textures.

The challenge for the UI was to add to that character, not get in the way. We started very simple and built on a solid foundation of sturdy typography and a subtle colour palette.
